Sometimes photography is all about serendipity. And serendipity is about the fact that being in a hurry is not where you want to be if you want a pretty shot.

If you’re experimenting with photography and not feeling especially confident about the quality of your shots, playing just a small waiting game allows for the right shot to find you. Stand back. Disengage from conversations around you and watch. Do you see a budding interaction about to happen? Do you see the perfect scene that just needs a person with a red shirt for example, to walk through it?

Let go of of time and expectation. Get into what’s around you. If you truly do that, it won’t seem like a wait at all. Just be there. Watch. Wait. Be poised and ready. That serendipitous moment will arrive.

Night Train

MOTION: Determined to catch this train in motion: This required almost a full 30 minutes of waiting for the next train to pass while each time, playing with the proper exposure adjustments

Flirtation

INTERACTION: I liked the chemistry between this couple so I sat close by, eavesdropping just a little. When the flirtation increased, I stepped forward.

Splash of Color

ELEMENTS: There's a metro sign on the left and other on the far right. Interspersed are straight lines and black pavement. I was looking for a splash of color to fall between and was lucky to catch it after sitting on the corner for 20 minutes.

Sea Squirrel

TIMING: This little guy was quick and nimble, requiring me to shoot multiple times to catch what I wanted.
